Stepping Stones Crisis Society is expanding its support services with the introduction of a new Legal Navigator Program, designed to help women and families fleeing family violence better understand and navigate complex legal systems during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

The Legal Navigator Program will provide clients with guidance, court support, referrals, and general legal information related to matters such as family violence, criminal charges, family court proceedings, and other legal processes. While the program does not provide legal advice, it is intended to help clients better understand their options, access resources, and feel supported as they move through often overwhelming systems.

Leading the program is Stepping Stones’ new Legal Navigator, Kiara Gamble.

“Legal processes can be intimidating and emotionally exhausting, especially for individuals already experiencing crisis or trauma,” said Gamble. “One of the biggest goals of this program is making sure people feel informed, supported, and not alone while navigating those systems.”

Gamble explained that while lawyers provide legal counsel and advice, the Legal Navigator role focuses on support, information, and helping clients feel more prepared throughout the process.

“There are supports available for some areas of the court system, but there are also gaps,” she said. “This program is about helping bridge some of those gaps and supporting individuals who may not otherwise know where to turn.”

Gamble brings previous experience working in shelter environments supporting women experiencing family violence. She holds a diploma in Correctional Studies and is currently continuing her education toward a Bachelor of Criminal Justice. Her professional focus has centered around advocacy, crisis support, and helping individuals access systems and services that can often feel difficult to navigate.

“We want people to feel supported without being re-traumatized through the process,” she said. “It’s about meeting people where they are and helping them move forward in a way that feels safe and empowering.”

Initially, the Legal Navigator Program will support clients across Stepping Stones’ existing programs and shelter services, with long-term goals of expanding support opportunities throughout the broader community as the program grows.

The addition of the Legal Navigator Program reflects Stepping Stones’ continued commitment to providing wraparound supports that address not only immediate safety needs, but also the longer-term barriers and challenges individuals may face as they rebuild their lives.
